Human Herpesvirus 8 Quantitative PCR
Alias: HHV-8, Kaposi's sarcoma-associated Herpesvirus
Discipline: Virology
Test information: Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the etiologic agent of Kaposi's sarcoma, primary effusion lymphoma, and multicentric Castleman's disease. These cancers often occur in the context of immunosuppression, which has made these HHV-8 associated malignancies an increasing global health concern with the persistence of the AIDS epidemic. Quantitative PCR for HHV-8 is used to confirm the presence of the virus as well as track the course of infection.
