Mycoplasma genitalium PCR
Alias: MGEN, MG, Mgen, NGU
Discipline: Virology
Test information: Up to 25% of uncomplicated cases of non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) are caused by infection with Mycoplasma genitalium. This organism is likely to be implicated in an even higher proportion of cases of recurrent or persistent NGU.
Testing aids in the diagnosis of M. genitalium urogenital infections in both male and female patients. Consideration should be given to testing for M. genitalium in all males with non-GC urethritis and all individuals with signs or symptoms of PID, cervicitis, endometritis, associated infertility, ano-rectal condition or epididymo-orchitis. Partner testing is advised for current partners only. Rectal infections are common and appear to be an important reservoir for resistance.
Availability: Referred to UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) Antimicrobial Resistance and Healthcare Associated Infections (AMRHAI) reference unit: Monday - Friday during routine hours: 08:45 - 17:15.
