Test information: This includes volume, pH, motility, vitality, spermatozoa morphology assessments, concentration and basic assessment of cells other than spermatozoa in a sample. The laboratory closely follows the methodology stated in WHO 2021 laboratory manual. However, the laboratory manual recommends that the motility, pH and vitality should be tested within 45 minutes of collection.

Patient Preparation, Sample Handling and Transport
Due to the laboratory's other commitments, testing is limited to set periods within a the week and usually in the morning Please send a completed pathology request form or referral letter to the haematology/ coagulation laboratory. The patient's full address must be correct, current and checked so that we can send the appointment, collection container & instructions. The referral must also include the patients demographics i.e. full name, date of birth, NHS number, requestor information and location of where the report should return to. Samples are collected by masturbation following at least 48 hours of abstinence. Production at the patients' home and delivery to the laboratory within 45 minutes for testing is required. Patients must not use public toilets to produce sample as they are, under UK law, guilty of encouraging an obscene act in a public place contrary to the Sexual Offences Act 2003.

Units and Reference Ranges / Interpretation
Male Fertility Analysis should include the two major quantifiable attributes: The total number of sperm: reflects sperm production by the testes and the patency of the post testicular duct. The total fluid volume: reflects the contribution of the various accessory glands and therefore their activity.

If there are particular problems regarding sample production or the patient lives too far away a room can be used in the Cornwall Centre for Reproduction Medicine on Wheal Unity ward by prior arrangement only (01872 253044).
