Coagulation Screen
Alias: N/A
Discipline: Coagulation
Test information: The Coagulation screen comprises of both a PT (Prothrombin Time) and an APTT (Activated partial Thromboplastin Time ). They measure the activity of the Intrinsic, Extrinsic and common factors of the Coagulation pathway.
The APPT measures the clotting time of the intrinsic and common pathway. The term 'thromboplastin' in this test refers to the formation of a complex formed from various plasma clotting factors which converts prothrombin to thrombin and the subsequent formation of the fibrin clot.It can be used in conjunction with the PT or for monitoring Unfractionated Heparin.
The Prothrombin Time (PT) is used in combination with the APTT as general screening procedure for clotting abnormalities and for monitoring patients receiving warfarin anticoagulant therapy.
The sample must reach the lab within 2 hours.
