Plasma Viscosity
Alias: N/A
Discipline: Immunology
Test information: Plasma viscosity measures the viscosity of the plasma within the blood. Plasma viscosity is affected by the amount of proteins in the blood. Protein levels in the blood can increase as part of the normal response to infection or inflammation. Plasma viscosity also increases in certain diseases where proteins (called 'paraproteins') are produced abnormally. Measuring the viscosity of blood may be used to detect and monitor inflammation. Plasma viscosity is therefore sometimes called an 'inflammatory marker' test. Other tests which measure inflammation include ESR and C-reactive protein.
